Kinston's Growth Story: The Global TransPark and the New Hangars Changing Everything
If you haven't paid attention to the North Carolina Global TransPark in a few years, it's worth a second look. For a long time, the 2,500-acre industrial and aviation complex in Kinston was seen as a project that hadn't lived up to its promise. That's changed. Today the TransPark has more than 1,800 employees working on site with companies like Spirit AeroSystems and flyExclusive, and several major new facilities are either under construction or recently completed.
When the TransPark first came to Kinston, most locals didn't think it would ever really take off. For years, that skepticism was fair — it was a slow build, and plenty of people had reason to doubt it would amount to much. But it finally has taken off, and for me, it's genuinely exciting to watch: the growth, the possibilities, and the jobs it's bringing to this area after so many years of waiting.
The Navy's New Hangar Complex
The biggest single project is the Fleet Readiness Center East (FRC East) expansion — a 700,000-square-foot complex being built specifically to maintain U.S. Navy and Marine Corps C-130 aircraft. Construction broke ground in 2024, backed by roughly $400 million in state funding, and is targeted for completion around September 2026. The project is expected to create more than 400 new jobs.
Layered on top of that, Governor Stein announced in April 2026 that the Navy signed a 10-year lease agreement with the TransPark for a cluster of brand-new hangars — giving the Navy 17 acres under roof. Officials expect the military to begin using available facilities this summer, with the first aircraft arriving in fall 2026, though additional construction on the hangars is expected to continue into next summer. Local estimates put the jobs tied to this lease at around 444.
flyExclusive's Expansion
In a separate, more recent development, private jet operator flyExclusive announced in July 2026 that it secured a $30 million state grant to expand its maintenance and repair operations and build a new pilot training center at the TransPark — on top of the company's existing Kinston headquarters. flyExclusive, one of the largest private jet operators in North America, started with a single hangar and has grown into a much larger operation since.
A New Path for Local Students
Growth at the TransPark isn't just about outside companies moving in — it's also building a local pipeline. Lenoir Community College opened the Senator Jim Perry Aviation Center for Excellence at the TransPark in May 2026: a 57,024-square-foot training facility that includes a 13,268-square-foot heated aircraft hangar, classrooms, maintenance labs, and flight simulators.
It houses degree programs in Aviation Management & Career Pilot Technology and Aviation Systems Technology, giving Lenoir County students a direct route into the kind of high-wage technical careers now showing up at the TransPark.
What It Means for Kinston
Put together, these projects represent one of the more significant economic shifts Kinston has seen in years — hundreds of new jobs, hundreds of millions of dollars in investment, and a training pipeline built specifically to put local residents into those jobs rather than importing all the talent from elsewhere.
It's still early, and how much of that promise translates into broader economic lift for the area remains to be seen — but the activity on the ground right now is real, and it's concentrated right here in Lenoir County.
What Kinston's Growth Means If You're Thinking About a Move
Job growth like this tends to bring more housing demand along with it — new employees relocating for TransPark jobs, students moving through Lenoir Community College's aviation programs, and existing residents rethinking their own plans as the local economy shifts.
Whether that interest is starting to show up in home prices and inventory is something we track closely, county by county, rather than something to guess at from the outside.
If you're weighing a move to Kinston or Lenoir County — whether you're relocating for one of these new opportunities or just want to understand what's happening in the local market — we're happy to walk you through what we're actually seeing on the ground. We have lots of new construction that offers the opportunity to build your way while keeping you in a price point that you can afford.
