Ah yes, the lovely town of Fremont, North Carolina: a quaint, quiet small town with a beautiful. Main Street and 2 stop lights that harkens back to the days of a slower pace of life. Very Mayberry-esque I would say. Incorporated in 1869 as a railroad town, it flourished during it’s heyday. LIke so many other small historic railroad towns, planes and a modern highway system led to it’s gradual decline. But people are now starting to find out why Fremont is a great placen to call home.
Fremont economically declined, but never lost it’s rich, heritage roots. It wasn’t just an agricultural railroad town, Fremont was and still is home to multiple sports, gardening clubs, churches, philanthropy, education and more. It also never lost it’s sense of community and belonging. From Facebook groups to special town meetings, to just hanging out at the local
coffee shop, you can always meet and find a familiar acquaintance to chat with.
Originally home to adult basketball, baseball and softball leagues, the legacy and pride still lingers but has shifted more to children’s batting leagues. There are still some adult softball leagues that are created and some church leagues that may also use Fremont’s longstanding
high quality public facilities. The Fremont little league teams have a long history of community involvement with dozens of championships and kids that have gone on to play for college and more. Fremont was once home to first class public tennis facilities and I believe with continued growth and increasing tax revenues, that there is a possibility of bringing tennis back as well.
Fremont is also home to the wonderful Daffodil Festival. Held every mid to late March, it is a joyous event that brings Fremont natives from all over the country back home. Started in the early 1980’s, the Fremont Daffodil Festival has bloomed into one of the best festivals in North
Carolina. From a 5k run to Miss Daffodil Pageants, this multi-day festival has a little something for everyone. Lots of vendors, beach music, car shows, a wide variety of foods, a beer garden, children’s playground with blow up bounce houses and so much more. The local garden club makes sure there are daffodils everywhere. Little yellow blossoms lining the railroad tracks and streetsides everywhere. It’s a beautiful sight when they are all in bloom. The residents also
participate and yards will be loaded with Daffodils at every head turn.
Fremont is also home to some great churches. Featuring several different protestant
denominations, Methodist, Baptist, Free-Will Baptist, Holiness, Church of God and
non-denominational, if someone is looking for a church to call home, one can certainly find it
there.
Also home to the Fremont Rotary Club, this organization gives back to the local community through fund raisers and charity. The local Rotary participates in farmers markets, the Daffodil Festival, veterans support and more. If one is looking to get involved to give back, help others and make the town stronger, this is a great way to join in.
You can’t mention the town of Fremont without mentioning it’s incredible elementary school. Like the town’s long standing sports history, Fremont has also always taken pride in academics for it’s children. Although there is a brand new school that has just been built, there is a community effort from past alumni to try and save the beautiful original school, auditorium and historic basketball gymnasium. The elementary school’s reputation reaches far beyond the town’s borders. Parents come from long distances to move to the area, just to have their children learn in this prestigious K-6 institution. Some use it as a cost saving strategy before sending them to private middle and high schools. Yes, it’s that good. The community has always supported a local public library where you can check out real physical books and media. The local library has long served as a place for educational programs as well.
A key to any good town is a good restaurant. Fremont has several with 2 new great restaurants that have recently opened. The first I have to mention and town mainstay, is Aggies Pizza and
Subs. This has been a pizza shop for over 40 years and Aggies has taken it and made it a household name. Main Street has added Bill’s Grill and The Venue Bar and Grill in the past year of 2026. Bill’s Grill took over the decades old mainstreet burger place and has made it into something special. Still home to great burgers, they also serve other southern comfort foods as well. The Venue Bar and Grill is a little more on the upscale side, yet not fussy at all. It has become popular for themed nights with wings, tacos, gourmet burgers, drinks and more. It is worth a trip to check out if you are in the area. A best kept secret that has also been around for over 40 years is the Fremont Food Mart. Originally, “The Fast Break”, an older looking service station from its exterior, is home to some of the best hoop cheese biscuits and breakfasts that you will find for many miles around. People will always stop at The Fremont Food Mart for breakfast if they are anywhere near the area. The quintessential blue collar breakfast shop that has probably sold tens of thousands of Hoop Cheese, sausage and tenderloin biscuits and the required accompanying Mountain Dews.
Aside from all of the heritage and growth, what makes Fremont special? It’s the people and the general southern laid back atmosphere. The people of Fremont have a sense of pride and care for one another. You see it that first Saturday in December, when the antique tractors hook up to trailers to pull the local pageant queens, town council members, Santa Claus and more while the community lines up to cheer as they slowly make their way down Main Street for the annual Christmas Parade. You see it when the local schools have their homecoming parades and championship parades. You see it when you drive down mainstreet in the evenings and people are out walking their dogs, enjoying the weather and scenery of the beautiful, historic homes. When you go inside the local gas station, the small local coffee shop or restaurant, the person working there may know you by first name. In a world of hustle and bustle, where people are more concerned with getting from point A to point B, these places like Fremont are getting harder and harder to find.
One might ask how I know so much about Fremont and why I feel the way I do about this small town, a NC Hwy 117 pass-through between Goldsboro and Wilson, NC? It’s because it is my hometown. I once walked from that grand elementary school with the classic American
Flagpole, up the Main Street sidewalk to the once great pharmacy soda shop for a real cherry cola. I walked to the local service station to play the latest arcade game with a pocket full of quarters. I was there at the very first Daffodil Festival events and pageants. I was on the
championship little league baseball teams. I played basketball in the historic gymnasium and was on stage in the historic auditorium that the community is trying to save. I watched the color of the leaves change and fall from the grand old hardwoods lining mainstreet from my school classroom. I can orate on the sense of community because I have lived it and experienced it. Whenever I go back, I run into others who have also moved away to other towns, cities and states, but they still speak highly of this town, and they always come back to visit.
At first glance, you might think that Fremont is just another dying old agricultural railroad town, but it’s far from that. It’s a diamond in the rough. A place in time that you can’t find anymore. Fremont will always be my home no matter where I live and the town holds a place in my heart for a reason. If you are moving to the area, I do suggest checking out homes in the 27830 zip code and see if you would also like to be a part of someplace special.
